Portugal. The Man @ WUK, Vienna (17.11.2009) – short update

Hey lads and lasses!

Sorry that it took me a while to make another update, the thing is that I haven’t been home a lot lately, so yeah. Anyways, I went to see Portugal. The man here in Vienna last week and it was great. In case you’re not familiar: Portugal. The man (yes, the man/men. no, not the country) is an experimental indie-rockband formed in Alaska (which is quite random) in 2004. They’ve released 5 albums so far; ‘Waiter: “you vultures!”‘, ‘Church Mouth’, ‘Censored colors’, ‘it’s complicated being a wizard’ and ‘ the satanic satanist’.

Now they’re touring because of the release of their latest album (the satanic satanist). To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect of the evening: songs that sounded exactly as on the cd with no differences whatsoever, or longstretched solo’s and less vocals – since their new album is quite a bit more melodic then the previous ones in my opinion.  Turned out these guys found a great balance between the two. They started off with a couple of older songs, where the solo’s we’re pretty stretched and after that they’d start playing ‘people say’, the opening track off their new album.  After that they’d keep switching between new songs and older ones. Their earlier work is also a bit more experimental, so that leaves the band more space for improvising cool solo’s I guess. But nevertheless, the songs of their new album didn’t sound exactly the same as on the cd either; some parts sounded slightly different, probably adapted to the fact that they didn’t have all the equipment on stage to create the exact same sound. But this difference in sound is exactly what makes seeing Portugal. The Man live quite a unique experience. I’d recommend everyone who likes indie to go see them if you have the chance, even if you don’t really like their music.

Here’s a small fragment of the concert. Enjoy!

Kings of Convenience – Declaration of dependence

Kings of Convenience will be releasing their third studio album on the second of October. Honestly I’m really having a hard time waiting for the album, since I’ve been in love with this Norwegian band from day one.
Some of you might only know Erlend Oye from the whitest boy alive or his work as a DJ, but KOC is definitely his best band.
If you’re not familiar with KOC, I suggest you get your hands on ‘quiet is the new loud’ (2001)  or ‘riot on an empty street’ (2004) a.s.a.p! They also released a remix album called ‘versus’ (with remixes done by four tet, ladytron, david withaker and so on), but that wouldn’t be a great point to start from if you haven’t heard their regular work before.

These two fellas already released two singles off their new album in some countries. Luckily youtube is accessible from every country in the world! Enjoy!

‘Mrs Cold’

‘Boat behind’

Quick fix of happiness

hey kids!

Quick update, happy music all around. Anything to get us through these exams again, right? Okay, first one’s by Owl City. To be honest, this is the only song I know by them, but I have come to love it because it is my brother’s ringtone. Yes, to hell with the autotune in everything else, but I find it works for this song. It’s a nice mix of poppy music with some hiphop influence. It kind of reminds me of The Script, who have been doing pretty good recently, too!
The second one is Danger: Radio, the newest project of Andrew DeTorres (lead vocals with The Scene Aesthetic). You can watch the video for it on their myspace, but this youtube link will give you the mp3. I would definitely keep an eye on these guys, their myspace playlist has been on non-stop for the past 2 days on this computer!

Bye y’all.
